Bring-Your-Own Project Intern
MATRIX Lab
Nate Herb is a senior at the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering at USMSM. During his time at the MATRIX Lab, he will be working to determine the feasibility of using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems to identify the category and severity of internal damage in wood frame structures in tandem with machine learning.
Nate's engineering research focus is primarily in aerospace and robotics, and gained interest in the MATRIX Lab internship as a way to broaden his engineering knowledge to areas not yet learned in classes. Should the study be successful, his plans are to apply the technology in creating an autonomous drone to conduct structural analysis on wood structures in hazardous or hard-to-reach areas in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Nate’s interest in engineering stems back to when he was just about 5 years old and wanted to “build the fastest train.” His focus has since shifted, but the spirit remains.
