Ingestible Capsule Intern

Clark School of Engineering at USMSM
MATRIX Lab
44219 Airport Road, California, MD 20619

Andrew Cosgrove is a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland (UMD) majoring in Civil Engineering. During his time at the MATRIX Lab, he’ll be assisting MATRIX Director of Remote Sensing and Microsystems Dr. Justin Stine in creating a gas testing chamber. The system will analyze the ability of a sensor to detect certain concentrations of gases under different conditions. The ultimate goal of the project is to be able to replace the sensor with an ingestible capsule to test the capsule’s capabilities in an environment similar to that of the human body.

As a MATRIX Lab intern, Andrew would like to directly contribute to the ingestible capsule project while learning about how the system works, and ultimately become an expert on ingestible capsules.

Andrew’s research interests include the physical sides of engineering, such as structural and mechanical. Through past education and internships, he’s learned how to prototype from conception to final product and operate 3D printers. He knows various CAD programs including Solidworks, AutoCAD and Revit. He also has machine shop experience and knows how to operate lathes, CNC machines, mills, brake presses, and drilling arms.

While at school, Andrew worked at WMUC, UMD’s fully student-run radio station, as a DJ and general body member. He also works with his local chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. During his first year at UMD, he made the Dean’s List. He’ll continue to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering and is planning to graduate in 2028.
